After I uh "left" the University of South Carolina in Columbia I attended Coastal Carolina where I signed up for a tough course load that included classical guitar. I assumed that the teacher was going to be some crabby old music school retiree that was going to force feed us Chopin, Bach and Paganini. When Mr. Yoder appeared in the first class I almost laughed out loud. He was 30 something in jeans in a tshirt wearing black converse high tops like he just got of the job as a roadie for Queensryche. The class was more of a discovery of what there was to love about music more than technical understanding of how to play it.
One of our assignments was to learn and play a song for the class. I learned a Jimi Hendrix song and sheepishly played it for everyone. After the class Mr. Yoder pulled me aside and gave me some great encouragement. I am not exactly sure what he said because this many years later and with an ego as big as mine, there is a slight chance I would exaggerate. I recall him telling me that I had what it takes to play music professionally and that I ought to get out there and try and land a gig.
I am sitting here at christmas with my family feeling grateful for the amazing journey i've been on and how lucky I was to have Tom Yoder as my guitar teacher.
I hope that everyone will take a minute to think of someone who helped them along the way and say Merry Christmas.
